Other Damage?
These insects do not cause structural damage but they can invade your home and cause other types of damage. The most common thing they do is destroy fabrics, such as curtains, sheets, and clothes. They consume carbohydrates so they can also eat book bindings, carpet, coffee, dandruff, glue, hair, some paints, photos, and sugar. Because they eat so many things, it’s common for them to invade pantries and get into food.
Signs to Look For
Silverfish are home invaders. They are nocturnal and avoid light. They are typically 13-25 millimeters long with their abdomens tapering at the end giving them a fish-like appearance. When they are newly hatched they are a whitish color, slowly fading to gray, and then getting a metallic shine as they get older. Look for stains or holes in paper, linens and invasions into your food.
Habits
Silverfish stay away from light so you’re not likely to find them during the day. They are commonly found in attics, basements, bathtubs, sinks, kitchens, and showers.
If Untreated…
If left untreated, silverfish can destroy your personal belongings costing you a lot of money in the long run.
