Most Common Types of Hornets in Washington

Washington is home to tons of different vegetation which in turn, attracts many different types of animals and insects. However, not all of these critters are ones that we want to encounter while we’re outside. Some of these critters, when found at our house, can be destructive pests that we want to get rid of as soon as possible… especially hornets. There are a few common types of hornets in Washington, and it’s important to know which kind you have. Hornets are not only destructive to your home, but they can also be super aggressive toward humans. Knowing which kind of hornet you are dealing with can help keep you and your home safe.

Most Common Types of Hornets in Washington

BALD-FACED HORNETS

Bald-faced hornets are one of the most common types of stinging insects in Washington. They are mostly black with white marks on their head and body. While they tend to build their nests away from areas with a lot of human traffic, they can be extremely aggressive if you do come across one. While they don’t usually cause destruction to your home, they can be a threat to you and your family because of their excruciatingly painful sting.

EUROPEAN HORNET

The European Hornet, often mistaken as a Murder Hornet, is commonly found in Washington and can be a dangerous pest to have around your home. Not only do they sting and attack humans that get near them, but they also attack honey bee nests. They can pose a serious threat to the bee population which then affects the plants and flowers that we need bees to pollinate.

MURDER HORNETS

While the Asian Giant Hornet, also called the Murder Hornet, isn’t extremely common in Washington, there have been multiple sightings of it over the past few years. While they look and behave very similarly to the European Hornet, they are much larger and tend to be more aggressive. Murder hornets are the largest hornet in the world, and they can measure up to 2 1/4 inches.
