Pest Control

What are the 3 Types of Pest Control?

Pest control is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and, in fact, there are 3 types of pest control that are used within an integrated approach. The three general categories are extermination, removal, and prevention.

The 1st Type of Pest Control: Extermination

Extermination reduces the population of the unwanted pests. This method is employed when there is an active infestation of pests that is interfering with daily living, damaging or destroying property, and/or adversely affecting your family’s health or morale.

Treatment includes spraying an active ingredient in strategic areas and/or placing active ingredient bait in spots where the pests will be attracted to it but where it is safely away from your family and pets.

Extermination pest control methods usually resolve an existing issue fairly quickly when the pests are properly identified and the right active ingredients used.

The 2nd Type of Pest Control: Removal

Removal includes trapping and removing live pests, as well as removing dead pests … which can be just as unpleasant and dangerous.

Trapping and removing live pests is a type of pest control that is used very selectively. It’s not appropriate for all pests (ants, roaches, and spiders, for example). While it’s essential to use for some species (like honey bees).

On the other hand, there’s not much selectivity in removing dead pests. They need to be removed for your family’s health, safety, and pleasure (it’s NOT pleasurable to smell decomposing rodents in your home). And they need to be removed FAST.

In addition to removing the source of odor, you also want to remove anything that will attract other unwanted pests (like flies and ants, among others).

Professional removal is the safest and most efficient way to handle this element of pest control.

The 3rd Type of Pest Control: Prevention

Prevention is about taking the steps necessary to keep pests from coming back … or from invading in the first place.

Some prevention steps you can do yourself. For example, keeping your home clean and properly storing food.

Professional prevention treatment can include spraying an active ingredient to repel pests from entering your home or property, as well as sealing up cracks and other entry points into your home.

Which of these 3 Types of Pest Control do You Need?

You may need one, two, or all three types of pest control to treat the pest issue you’re having. A professional pest control provider will be able to advise you on which type — or combination of types — is best for your particular pest situation.

Targeted, integrated pest control identifies the problem first, then prescribes a custom treatment plan based on your specific, individual situation.
