How to Keep Ticks Out of Your Yard

Ticks are blood-suckers, and in doing so they can transmit Lyme disease into your system. Lyme disease can give you headaches, fever, and fatigue. If left untreated it can spread to the joints, nervous system, and other organs, sometimes even leading to death. Lyme disease should be taken seriously and the place where you can start is in your yard. You want to deter ticks from living in your yard to prevent any possibility of getting Lyme disease.
  • Mow the Lawn
Ticks like to live in long grass, so mowing your lawn can make your yard less appealing to them. Don’t forget to edge your grass as well. The edge of the lawn is where they tend to be the most.
  • Create a Barrier
Ticks don’t often cross gravel or wood chip barriers because it irritates their feet. If you place a barrier of wood chips or gravel around your yard it can help prevent ticks from entering.
  • Use a Plant as a Repellant
There are certain plants that can be used to repel ticks away from your yard. These include American beauty-berry bushes, lavender, garlic, pennyroyal, pyrethrum, sage, eucalyptus, mint, catnip, chamomile, rosemary, etc. As you can see there are plenty of plants to choose from to help repel ticks.
  • Let the Sunlight Shine Through
Ticks like moist areas, so the more sun you get into your yard to allow places to dry, the better. You can help sunlight get through by trimming your trees and shrubs, removing brush, and clearing out sticks, leaf piles, and cut grass.
  • Get Chickens
Getting chickens isn’t an option for everyone, but if you’re able to, chickens will eat ticks (and other insects) in your yard. Let them roam free in your yard and watch the tick population disappear.
  • Stack Woodpiles Neatly
Ticks like to make their homes in woodpiles because they will retain moisture. But if you neatly stack your woodpiles, it allows most of the wood to have exposure to the sun, drying it out faster.
