Fleas are pesky creatures that can infest your home and cause problems for you and your animals. Once you notice them it’s important to get right on it to get rid of them. The longer you wait, the harder it will be. So here’s is your step-by-step process on how to get rid of fleas in your house.
Your pets are likely the source of the flea infestation, so start with them. Bathe them with flea shampoo and apply flea treatments. Use a flea comb to get any live fleas off your pet and immediately dip the comp in a flea killing solution (hot, soapy water). There’s no point in getting the fleas out of your home if your pets are continuing to bring them in.
For heavy flea infestations, you may need to get rid of bedding altogether. But for mild flea infestations, washing bedding in warm, soapy water will kill adult, larvae, and eggs. Make sure you wash your pets’ bedding as well. You’ll have to do this every couple of weeks to keep the infestation out.
A beater-bar style vacuum is needed to remove fleas from your carpets. Thoroughly go through the entire house and vacuum all carpeted areas. Use vacuum attachments to get into corners and baseboards. Repeat this process every 2 days for up to 30 days.
Once you’ve finished the carpets, move on to the hard floors, furniture, upholstery, cabinets, cushions, pillows, and your bed. If your vacuum has a bag, take it out when your done and seal it in another bag and throw it out. Repeat the vacuuming every 2 days for up to 30 days or until the infestation is gone.
For heavy flea infestations, an insecticide may be necessary. There are a few options here. You could use foggers which fill the room with toxic fog. You’ll have to leave the house and remove all pets. You’ll most likely need a fogger for each room and you’ll have to protect exposed wood and tile with newspaper. If you’re not too fond of using foggers, you could use powder treatments. These are safer and more environmentally-friendly. Once you have cleaned everything, sprinkle the powder into furniture crevices, on the perimeter of all the walls, and cover your floor. Brush the powder into carpets until it is no longer visible. Fleas don’t go away in a day. It will most likely take several weeks to get rid of them completely. Once you get rid of them, work on prevention tactics to keep them from coming back!
