3 Beetles You May Find in Your Washington Home

There are many insects that live in the Pacific Northwest, but there are 3 beetles you may find in your Washington home that you should pay particular attention to.

They are powder post beetles, carpet beetles, and Japanese beetles.

Powder Post Beetles

Powder post beetles are wood-boring insects that can cause significant damage to structural lumber in your home. They can be up to 3/8 inch long, with red, brown, or black bodies. They have a 1- to 5-year life cycle, so if untreated, they can cause damage that can cost thousands of dollars to repair.

Carpet Beetles

Carpet beetles are very common in the Pacific Northwest. They are very small — under 1/3 inch long — and can have various colors or color patterns. They do not eat man-made materials, but they do feed on wool (carpets and rugs as well as fabric), silk, leather, feathers, and fur. They can cause damage to clothing, carpets, and other home furnishings.

Japanese Beetles

Japanese beetles have a metallic green head and thorax, while their wing covers are copper-colored. They don’t live indoors, but they’re a problem because they eat the leaves of over 300 different types of plants, flowers, and fruits.

The Washington State Department of Agriculture asks that you report Japanese Beetle sightings to help with eradication efforts. Click here to learn more and do so now.
