As the weather warms up, we invite you to consider these spring pest control tips to prevent bigger pest issues in and around your home in the months ahead. Because a little prevention now can really pay off down the road.
Some Spring Pests to Be Aware Of
First, let’s talk about some of the common pests that you’ll be encountering in the upcoming spring months here in Washington.
Rodents — Rats and mice are active year-round but they’re particularly a nuisance in the spring.
Stinging Insects — Wasps, hornets, bees, and mosquitoes start coming around in the spring.
Ants — Both carpenter ants and odorous house ants or “sugar ants” become more active in the spring.
Spring Cleaning
If you’re doing spring cleaning — both inside and outside your home — you’re probably getting into nooks and crannies that you don’t always pay attention to. Take this opportunity to look for access points and even signs of pests already being there so that you can take charge before they do. Look for new chips and cracks in your walls, baseboards, floors, around windows and doors, and any weather damage that may have occurred outside. Sealing the cracks and crevices and fixing these issues while they’re small can both keep pests out and prevent the structural issue from becoming bigger. Remove any standing water that has accumulated outside and clear debris away from the exterior of your home, including from your gutters. Leaves and other plant material could be hiding other issues. Also look for rodent droppings, which of course would indicate the presence of rodents. Small holes in wood parts of your home and/or sawdust piles may be a sign of carpenter ants.
Eliminate Food Sources
These are best practices year-round, they but are especially important when pests are active in the spring.
- Wipe up spills and crumbs right away.
- Store food — including pet food — in tightly sealed metal, glass, or heavy plastic containers when possible.
- Don’t leave pet food sitting out.
- Keep food in the pantry sealed and stored properly. For example, use clips or ties to tightly close open bags of cereal, crackers, chips, bread, or any other similar foods.
- Keep garbage cans and recycling bins closed and tightly sealed if possible.
