How to Block Mouse and Rat Holes in Your Home

Once you’ve successfully gotten rid of rodents, it’s important to block the mouse and rat holes in your home to keep these uninvited guests from coming back. While they took up residence in your home, mice and rats very likely chewed holes in your walls and/or floors to gain easy access to the various rooms of your house.

Your First Step is to Find Them

Look for these holes around the pipes under sinks as well as those going to your hot water heater and furnace. You may also find them in corners of closets and around your fireplace and doors. Other likely spots are in and around kitchen cabinets and behind your refrigerator or stove. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) says mice can squeeze through a hole the size of a nickel, and rats can squeeze through a hole the size of a half dollar. So you’re looking for very small holes, and they can be easy to miss.

Next, Seal Them Up

You can use common materials found at a hardware store to seal the holes and block mice and rats from coming back. For small holes, you can stuff steel wool into the hole and keep it in place with caulking. For larger holes, the CDC recommends do-it-yourselfers using lath screen, cement, or metal sheeting.

An Easier, More Effective Option

It’s much easier … and usually more effective … to have a professional do the job for you. They know what to look for, and they’re experienced in sealing the holes up to prevent re-entry. Hiring a professional gives you peace of mind in knowing the problem is taken care of, and you’ll save the time and stress of trying to do it yourself.
